ADVANCED AIR MOBILITY

Electric aircraft, especially eVTOLs, have drastically different operating profiles and battery requirements than EVs. Like EVs, eVTOLs need high levels of specific energy for higher range. However, eVTOLs require significantly more power than EVs for lift-off and especially landing, when the battery is partially or largely depleted. At issue is the simple fact that until now, lithium-ion batteries could not deliver high levels of energy and power together in one cell. Ionblox is the first and only cell manufacturer to achieve this result.

This combination of high energy and high power provides a step change in performance and is unique to our cell technology, which is why our strategic partners, including Lilium and Applied Materials, have invested in our company.

“Our team scouted more than 100 companies and concluded that Ionblox’s pouch cells offered the best solution for achieving our needs through performance, certification, and into scale production.” —  Lilium

The following chart compares the high specific energy and power of Ionblox’s 12Ah electric aviation cell versus two leading cells. Ionblox cells, as tested by independent laboratories, show both higher available energy and power than our competitors’ cells, which can only offer: 1) good specific energy, but low specific power; or 2) good power, but low specific energy. Simply put, Ionblox’s cells can extract a higher percentage of the available energy and power across the cells’ entire performance range than our competitors’ cells, enabling a broader range of aviation applications.

Note:

And for many applications, certain power levels need to always be accessible– most commercial cells will have lower available power at lower states of charge. Ionblox cells are unique in their ability to deliver high power densities even at low states of charge (~3,000 W/kg @ 30% SOC).
